Making Your Own Fabric "Ribbon"

I'm using a dark brown fabric to add some dramatic contrast to my green toile nursery bedding.  I even added a strip of it to my thrift store valance.

I want to make my own ribbons to hang my canvas nursery letters!
There might be a better way to do this (I can only call them "ribbons" in good conscience), but I am only a novice sewer... ewww... ummm... seamstress!
I figured the easiest DIY ribbon would simply be a wider version of a fabric tie (like the kind made for chair pads).

Here's what I did...
1.   Cut fabric into strips
Mine were 2½" x 17".  These made ⅝" wide "ribbons".

2.  Fold edges in
so they meet in the center.  Then fold in half.  Iron flat.

3.  Sew along the edge

They work great as simple ribbons for hanging my canvases.
I didn't bother to finish the ends (I just stapled them to the back of the canvas!)

Tomorrow I'll show you how I made and installed those cute knobs for the wall hanging.  It was easy peasy!

  1. I made similar letters for Iana's nursery when I was preggers! No fabric in ours, but I created my own stencils and painted over some nicely cut (think crown molding type) wood blocks,I glued on the wooden letters with wood glue, added some eye-let screws and some gorgeous ribbon and voila! Beautiful nursery letters! I might post a pic on your wall of the finished product! Great work you!!!!
