Refinishing a Crib: spray paint is your friend

Before I started building the faux wainscoting in the nursery, I decided on the colors I waned the room to have: white wainscoting, soft green walls and bedding, and a rich brown on the furniture.  And I did not want to buy that furniture if I didn't have to.

So sometime in January, I refinished my crib from white to Kona Brown (Rustoleum).

Here's a before picture I borrowed from the internets (white Jenny Lind Crib - hope they don't minds).

You can see that the tines/spokes/ bars on this thing are pretty elaborate.  No way was I going to try and sand them.  Being frugal, I also started painting this thing with a can of paint and a brush.

And I learned something.
Sometimes it is better to use spray paint.  The shape of the crib bars made painting this thing a nightmare.  So I adapted.  Since I hadn't sanded, I picked up both primer (red) and Kona Brown spray paint.

What would have taken me a week, took me a day!  It might be more expensive, but it looks better, and I'm reminded that time is money after all!

In a case like this, I say go ahead and spray paint!

  1. I had to come over from the paint party because of the "Pregnant with Power Tools" title - classic! :)

  2. I love the title too! I painted right up until birth with each of my kiddos! I'm proud of you! Are you doing a bellymask? If so, I have an old post to one!!!!! I did one with each of my 3 kids. Let me know and I can send you the link!

    Blessings, Jennifer

  3. It looks great! I did projects the whole way through my pregnancies too! Good for you!

  4. it turned out great, and yes sometimes it is easier to go with the spray paint!

  5. That's a Jenny Lind crib. That's what I had for my girls and have saved for my grand babes. None yet.

  6. I'm painting a Jenny Lind crib a bright, cheery yellow and I was just curious how many spray paint cans you went through and if you used a top gloss as well? The crib looks great, by the way!! :)

  7. Hi Misty!
Good luck with your crib! I bet it'll be gorgeous - sounds like it will, I love a bright yellow!
Since I started with a brush, it's hard to say...
If I'd gone spray the whole way... Maybe 2 cans of primer and 2 of paint (but only b/c the primer was practically the same color!) I bet it'll take you 3 cans of yellow. Since the spray paint was gloss, I didn't put on a top coat. I'm also not that worried about the kiddo chewing on anything except the plastic covered teether rail.
Come back and gimme a link to your finished crib when u'r done or email pregnantpower(at)gmail(dot)com!!! Can't wait to see it!

  8. Just found this post! Thank you! I've just decided to spray paint my soon-to-be baby girl's crib aqua and you answered my questions about spray paint. I had already decided to do it but wasn't sure about primer, how many cans, etc.

  9. Maybe this is a dumb question but did you paint the crib assembled or did you take it apart?

  10. Hi! I love the crib! I want to paint a similar jenny lind style crib. How did you remove the plastic teething rails? I can't figure it out. Great job!

  11. How toxic is that paint?? I'd be extremely careful with a job like this to ensure you use a non-toxic VOC free finish for the health of your child. VOCs in paint can emit vapours for years after use and studies suggest can lead to cancer. Just sayin'.

  12. I know this posting is 2 yrs past now but hoping others can help answer some questions as I just got the SAME Jenny Lind crib off Craigslist for $50. Still in search of another as we are expecting twins. Anyways, ours is white and wanting to change it to a bright cheery yellow. Does anyone have recommendations of the BEST spray paint brand to use to not harm myself or the babies? We just painted the walls w/ a low VOC paint and the wood paneling with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint that has low VOC. Any advise would be great! :-)

  13. Call Home Depot and ask what they have in Non-Toxic spray paints.

  14. I definitely would not paint a baby's crib with spray paint or regular paint. You need to use a baby safe paint with no VOC's. Lullaby Paints is a good option.
